We have recently imported a stunning and low mileage 2003 Volkswagen Passat 4.0 W8 4-Motion Automatic finished in Metallic Black with Beige Leather.
A superb example (grade 4 in Japan) that has covered only 61000 kms (at the time of writing) which equates to just 38000 miles with Japanese Service History, full bookpack and both remote keys present.
It drives effortlessly with lots of torque and great traction courtesy of the AWD system. The fuel consumption is not bad either, averaging around 30 mpg on motorway runs and about 24 mpg locally, with a range of 400 miles from a full tank; quite good for a 275 bhp 8 cylinder petrol all wheel drive car.
The specification is the highest I have seen on a Passat and includes the solar sunroof, electric front seats, heated seats front & rear, nappa leather, cruise control, xenon lights, ski-bag, esp, rear blind. Brand new a W8 to this specification would have cost £36,000. It has had a pre sale service and we have replaced the a/c compressor as part of our preparation. The tyres are currently 4 Bridgestone winter tyres with around 5mm of tread remaining.
The W8 engine is superb being fairly economical and with a great soundtrack. It is part of VW's 'W' family of modular engines which included the W12 units fitted to Bentley models. This model is sure to become collectable in the near future.
During the 'Beast from The East' this car has been invaluable showing no signs of getting stuck or any loss of traction! Overall a great compact luxury car to use in all weather conditions.
The W8 is supplied with 2 remote keys, full bookpack, a UK market sales brochure, a copy of the de-registration export certificate, Japanese Service History and copies of invoices for preparation work carried out by a VW specialist in the UK.
As well as the benefits of being lower mileage and rust free examples, another advantage of buying a larger engine size Japanese import is you save on road tax. The reason is that cars imported from Japan that are over 10 years old are not taxed by the DVLA according to their CO2 emissions. They are instead charged a flat rate based on engine size, the same rates that you would pay on a pre 2001 registered car. Because of this a Japanese import W8 costs £255 a year to tax whereas if the W8 was an official UK market example it would cost £305 per year, so a saving of £50 per year.
